Recognition of Kosovo, a breakaway region of Serbia gave a path to new intention over the dispute of international norms, great powers and fear of small states challenged by the same issue. Recognition of Kosovo has been claimed to be the solution to a long-lasting dispute, ethnic violence and tensions on the Balkans. However, seems that puzzle as such has been solved only for Kosovo and the certain powers. Furthermore, Kosovo, that has been declared to be unique and nevertheless precedent to any similar case in the world, gave a great hope to other breakaway regions in the international system. Moreover, it gave greater optimism to the de facto regimes which are implicitly supported by Russia. In particular, one of the cases is Abkhaza, breakaway region of Georgia. Recognition of Kosovo has risen much dangerous trends than only great courage to separatist regimes around the world. It has remarkably shaken the cornerstone of the statehood sovereignty and made self-determination rather vague term than it was practiced previously. Reasons to recognise Kosovo are grounded nowhere but in exclusive decision of major actors in international politics.
holds BA degree in International Relations from Tbilisi State University and MA of Arts in Social Sciences, specialising in European Studies from Tallinn/Tampere Universities. Driven by personal experience, Ms.Tsurtsumia attempts to produce a comprehensive analysis of how Kosovo resembles and differs from the case of Abkhazia,Georgia.
