What seems to have gone unnoticed about Indian literary thought is its aggressiveness. We are used to the calmer, non-aggressive, nature of Indian philosophy and thought. There is, however, another side to Indian critical and literary mind. This has emerged in the writing of Indian criticism and literary theory. This book is an endeavour at bringing to the fore this aggressive attitude that is a part of Indian literary thought. If there is one feature which binds together India s critical tradition, it is this aggressiveness. It results from the reaction against the West s imperialistic and colonising designs. It is surprising that Indian scholarship has been almost blind to this fact. This book is very largely about the current, or living, tradition of Indian Criticism and Theory. The book examines the anti-imperialistic ideas of Aurobindo, C. D. Narasimhaiah, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Homi K. Bhabha. It puts together those views of these four, which make up the living critical tradition of India s last hundred years. The book is a helpful document for those who are interested in knowing about Indian Literary Tradition.
