In Western art, Realism can be seen as a traditional concept in the past, but in China, it is the significant issue with Modern art since the middle of 20th century. What the relationship is between the Western Realism and the Chinese one? How the Realism works to Chinese painting in the modern time? As a critical idea with an easy to be understood visual language, why Realism has been shelved or distorted from our contemporary art? Is it a chance that the key values of Realism back into our contemporary art and be equally shared within the different cultures of the world today? The author took a specific view of between´ cultures to researched and compared the original Realism - the 19th century Realism in France, and the Chinese Realism from the 20th century; historically and academically summarized the subject of Chinese Realist painting. The author has argued and declared the need of Realism for today to establish an independent, personal space allows artist to develop his own understanding of the truth. Xuning Wang not only provided a theory but also shared his experience of how he practiced his theory in painting.
