Stress, burnout, and teaching... French immersion teachers spend a lot of time preparing exciting lesson plans, marking assignments, attending meetings, helping students after school, and they feel the pressure at work. There is little room for collegiality and daily routines are not easily shared amongst teachers who are often pressed for time! This doctoral research was conducted by the author to provide solutions for French immersion teachers in British Columbia, Canada. Administrators and parents need to be more aware of the problems encountered by educators each day. Professional development has to be readily available at the school district level as new French immersion teachers struggle with too many demands placed on them. Classroom management, creative lesson plans, communication between home and school, personal growth, and cognitive dissonance in the school setting take their toll on them. We are losing too many new French immersion teachers due to extreme fatigue, stress, depression and burnout. Change is needed to create a positive teaching and learning environment in French immersion schools across British Columbia, Canada.
Stress and burnout are topics we all know too well in today´s world. I am a teacher/researcher/writer and I wanted to conduct a research among my colleagues and show that stress leading to burnout is very common in the educational setting. This doctoral research gave a voice to many French immersion teachers, in British Columbia, Canada.
