This book assesses the histrorical developments that occured in Kuyyu, in one of the home lands of Tuulama Oromo in Selale area in the 19th and 20th centuries. Particularly, it addresses the socio-caltural, political and economic history of the Kuyyu Oromo as principal themes in the historiography of the oromo people in the centuries mentioned above. Thus, by making a major emphasis on the people of Oromo, the book enriches an understanding on local history of Ethiopia. The gadaa institution in its totality preserved many aspects of the history, tradition as well as the identity of the Oromo society to the current Oromo generation although it faced challenges that had shaken the system in the 19th century. The Arfan Diiraamu had lived for centuries in Kuyyu under the gadaa institution. Their ancestors like the Bacho even in the first half of the 19th century had their own Haayyu´s. It means the Bacho´s continued practicing the political aspect of the gadaa system for sometime in the 19th century. Informants indicate that the Arfan Diiraamu in Kuyyu still believe in the traditional religion of the Oromo and observe its rules.

Mr. Alemseged Debele was born in Ethiopia. He joined Addis Ababa University in 2000 and gradutated with B.A. degree in history. After teaching history in high school and university for some years, he joined again Addis Ababa university to pursue his M.A. and he got his M.A. in history in 2010. Now he is teaching history at Dire Dawa University.
