Examination of the early (European) influences of the upcomming film and modern arts on William Faulkner´s novel writing and demonstration of the interdependency of film and novel writing in his work. Part 1 tries to answer the question who William Faulkner actually was and examines the influences on his development as a modernist writer: the South, Sherwood Anderson and modern European painting. Part 2 traces the cinematic in Faulkner´s novels, explores cinematic techniques in Faulkner´s writing and looks for references to films and criticism in Faulkner´s work as a novelist. Part 3 takes a look at screenwriting in Hollywood, examines the task of screenwriting and analyzes Faulkner´s films and treatments. Part 4 shortly goes into the theory of film adaptation and compares more or less successful film adaptations of Faulkner´s novels and short stories.
