Examination of the early (European) influences of the upcomming film and modern arts on William Faulknerīs novel writing and demonstration of the interdependency of film and novel writing in his work. Part 1 tries to answer the question who William Faulkner actually was and examines the influences on his development as a modernist writer: the South, Sherwood Anderson and modern European painting. Part 2 traces the cinematic in Faulknerīs novels, explores cinematic techniques in Faulknerīs writing and looks for references to films and criticism in Faulknerīs work as a novelist. Part 3 takes a look at screenwriting in Hollywood, examines the task of screenwriting and analyzes Faulknerīs films and treatments. Part 4 shortly goes into the theory of film adaptation and compares more or less successful film adaptations of Faulknerīs novels and short stories.
