The establishment of waste reception facility at ports is a key factor for successful implementation of the MARPOL Convention enacted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with an objective to keep our oceans free from pollution. Unfortunately, many of the signatories of the MARPOL Convention are reluctant to address this important issue in the manner they are supposed to. This topic was selected for post graduate maritime studies in the year 2000. But, even after a decade, the problem seems to have not been dealt with. With MARPOL Annex IV (Sewage) getting into action and the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention coming into existence, the necessity for shore reception facilities has increased further. It is needless to mention that there are various obstacles in establishing sufficient shore reception facilities at seaports. This book addresses these issues; the big picture is viewed meticulously with some conceptual ideas for establishment of reception facilities that can help the professionals as well as maritime and port authorities in getting started with their task.
