Environmental issues are on the increase everyday in the global community, thus Namibia is no exception. Unfortunately for Namibia and its fragile environment it has to deal with climate change, loss of biodiversity, desertification and other underlying issues and causes. In this book education is viewed as a strong agent for change in our communities as we deal with these environmental issues to mitigate and adapt to them. The book explores the origin of environmental education in Namibia, since its independence in March in 1990. It outlines references to some early post independence initiatives in environmental education and later focused primarily on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) echoing the call for implementing ESD activities as outlined by the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development adopted during the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002. The book gives examples of Namibian practices responding to the DESD at the dawn of the second half of DESD. The Namibian Environmental Education Certificate Course and how it shaped and informs the practices of non-formal environmental educators is presented.
