Chiral ferrocenyl phosphines account for one of the most successful ligand classes in asymmetric catalysis and several different types of ligands are reported and routinely used. However, the development of new chiral phosphines, which are quick and easily synthesized and show high activities and selectivities in asymmetric catalysis is still an important task for the chemical community. This book is roughly divided into two parts, whereof the first part reviews some general properties and synthetic methods of P-stereogenic phosphines. The second part deals with the preparation and characterization of bidentate and tridentate P-stereogenic ferrocenyl phosphines. The author describes the syntheses in detail and discusses the properties of these compounds. The coordination behavior of the prepared ligands is analyzed on the basis of crystal structures as well as IR and NMR spectroscopic measurements of corresponding transition-metal complexes. The special characteristics of trifluoromethyl substituted phosphines is outlined and the high potential of the prepared compounds as ligands in asymmetric catalysis is demonstrated. An experimental section completes this part of the book.
Dr. Jonas Bürgler was born in Davos in 1982. He studied chemistry at the ETH Zürich and obtained his Master of Science in 2006. After a 5 month internship at Solvias AG in Basel he started his PhD studies with Prof. Togni at the ETH and earned his Doctor of Science in 2011. Currently he is a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Wood at CSU in the USA.
