Im letzten Jahrzehnt hat sich Indien als vitales und innovatives Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst etabliert. Eine neue Generation von Künstlern reagiert mit Kreativität und intellektuellem Tiefgang auf die rasanten Veränderungen, die die globalisierten Städte der größten Demokratie der Welt kennzeichnen. Künstler und Künstlergruppen wie Rina Banerjee, Hemali Bhuta, Atul Dodiya, Sheela Gowda, Shilpa Gupta, Subodh Gupta, Jitish Kallat, Reena Kallat, Rashmi Kaleka, Bharti Kher, Ravinder Reddy, Vivan Sundaram oder Thukral & Tagra lassen sich im Chaos städtischen Lebens treiben oder suchen nach einer stillen, nach innen gewandten Lebensweise. Sie beschreiben die Träume ihrer Generation und decken soziale Konflikte auf. Ihre Gemälde, Skulpturen, Fotografien, Installationen und interaktiven Kunstprojekte zeigen die große ästhetische Bandbreite, mit der Künstler heute ein Leben auf der Grenze zwischen dem Lokalen und dem Globalen interpretieren.

The contemporary Indian art scene has been flourishing since the nineties, among others factors due to economic growth, social and cultural tensions, and new media and visual technologies. At the same time, the Indian art scene has opened up in earnest to the global scene through exchanges, dialogue, travel, and collaborations across national boundaries. The publication India: Art Now shows how some of the countrys most interesting contemporary artists interpret existence in the intersection between the local and the global. The book presents contributions by the museums curators as well as leading Indian critics, scholars, writers, and artists, discussing new developments and artistic stances in contemporary Indian art and its impact on the global art scene.
