Der vorliegende Roman handelt von dem berühmten Pianisten Ryder, dessen Leben auf mysteriöse Weise aus der Bahn gerät. Nach einem anstrengenden Flug betritt Ryder sein Hotel, am liebsten würde er sich die drei Tage bis zu seinem großen Konzert einfach zurückziehen und entspannen. Doch er findet keine Ruhe, ständig kreuzen mysteriöse Gestalten seinen Weg, Bekannte und Fremde, Lebende und Totgeglaubte, die sich von ihm als Künstler Hilfe oder gar Erlösung erhoffen. So bittet eine Frau ihn, auf der Beerdigung ihres Hundes Klavier zu spielen, der alkoholabhängige Dirigent Leo Brodkey bekniet Ryder, für ihn seine Ex-Geliebte zurückzuerobern. Geschmeichelt versucht Ryder den vielfältigen Wünschen gerecht zu werden. Am Abend seines großen Konzerts muß Ryder dann feststellen, wie schnell gute Taten vergessen sind.

Ishiguro, Kazuo
Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1954 and moved to Britain at the age of five. His eight works of fiction have earned him many awards and honours around the world, including the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Booker Prize. His work has been translated into over fifty languages. The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go were made into acclaimed films. Ishiguro also writes screenplays and song lyrics. He was given a knighthood in 2018 for Services to Literature. He also holds the decorations of Chevalier de l´Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star from Japan.
