Nedko Solakov (geb.1957 in Cherven Briag, Bulgarien) sprengt mit seinem aktuellen Buchprojekt einmal mehr den Rahmen und nutzt auch hier das bereits Vorhandene, um zeichnend, malend, kritzelnd daraus Neues zu schaffen. In Stil, Format und Struktur seiner 2011 erschienenen, umfangreichen Monografie zum Gesamtwerk folgend, geht auch The Exceptions von vier Ausstellungsorten aus, die je eine Arbeit pro Jahr von 1980 bis 2010 präsentierten. Als Kondensat trifft die neue Publikation eine bestechende Auswahl daraus, ergänzt um aktuelle Werke: so das auf der dOCUMENTA (13) prominent gezeigte Knights (and Other Dreams) und die jüngste Serie Paintings with No Texts, die sich als rein bildlicher Kommentar auf Solakovs charakteristische, schriftintegrierende Ästhetik der Narrativität versteht. Der elegant reduzierte Band ist eine ebenso beschwingt leichte wie tiefschürfende Preziose der Verdichtung.

With his current book project, Nedko Solakov (born 1957 in Cherven Briag, Bulgaria) once again breaks the mold and here, too, uses what is already available in order to draw, paint, or scrawl something new. Continuing in terms of style, format, and structure with the extensive monograph on his oeuvre that was published in 2011, The Exceptions also proceeds from four exhibition venues that between 1980 and 2010 each picked out and presented one work per year. The new, compact volume assembles an impressive selection of these, supplemented by new works: Knights (and other dreams), which prominently featured at dOCUMENTA (13), and the most recent Paintings with No Texts series, which sees itself as a purely visual commentary on Solakov s characteristic aesthetic of narration, which integrates text. The elegantly condensed and slim volume is both a buoyantly light as well as profoundly precious item of compaction.
