Thukydides ist der Begründer der politischen Geschichtsschreibung. Er war ungefähr 30 Jahre alt, als 431 v. Chr. der Peloponnesische Krieg ausbrach, jener jahrzehntelage Machtkampf zwischen Athen und Sparta, an dessen Ende Athen - und mit ihm die Demokratie - gegen das spartanische Königtum unterlag. Thukydides hatte hier sein Lebensthema gefunden. Doch bevor er zum Chronisten der Kämpfe zwischen den beiden Blöcken wurde, hat er selbst an ihnen teilgenomnmen. Im Jahre 425/4 v. Chr. bekleidete er das hohe militärische Amt des Strategen, bis ein Misserfolg zu seiner Verbannung führte. Er lebte daraufhin 20 Jahre im Exil und kehrte erst nach Kriegsende nach Athen zurück.

Thukydides wurde um 460 v. Chr. in Athen geboren. Er war vertraut mit dem Werk Herodots, dessen Vorlesung er selbst beiwohnte. Später war er im attischen Militär als General tätig. 424 v. Chr. nahm er als Flottenkommandant am Peloponnesischen Krieg (431-404) teil. Da er den Fall der Stadt Amphipolis an den spartanischen Feind nicht verhindern konnte, wurde er für 20 Jahre aus Athen verbannt. Sein Exil verbrachte er in Thrakien, wo er den Verlauf des Krieges genau beobachtete und analysierte. Auf diese Weise schuf Thukydides sein umfangreiches Geschichtswerk. Nach Ende des Peloponnesischen Krieges (404 v. Chr.) kehrte er vermutlich nach Athen zurück, wo er um 400 v. Chr. verstarb.
