The study examined Toronto print news media framing of type 2 diabetes. Manifest content analysis was performed on three Toronto newspapers: the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, and the National Post, to examine the degree to which media employ a social determinants of health or lifestyle approach. The study also investigated the racialization of diabetes. Findings mirror that of biomedical discourse which racializes the disease and emphasizes individual behavioural factors. These outcomes have major implications for diabetes programs and policies due to the agenda setting function of the media.
