Diabetes Mellitus is not a new word to be heard of. It has been known since 1st century. But now it has become one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in humans. The reasons are the sedentary life style, lack of adequate exercise and type of diet. Pharmaceutical companies have been working to discover the new drugs and feasible techniques for administration in Diabetes Mellitus. Unfortunately; like the thorns are attached to the roses, these drugs also bring with them some degree of adverse effects. Modern medicine has been famous for its efficient role in therapeutics, but the side effects have always been an issue. So Herbal Medicine has been used side by side.Currently the trends have started to shift more towards the natural products to combat the present increasing health issues. My work is on a herb named Berberis lycium Royle, known as Barberry in English. Its roots, root bark has been investigated for lowering blood sugar levels. But roots are found readily in its cultivating areas. So I have chosen the bark of the herb as it can be easily transported and made available to the Diabetics.
