A parodic reworking of the Frankenstein myth and a vicious satire of the Communist revolution and the concept of the New Soviet man, A Dogs Heart was banned by the censors in 1925 and circulated only in samizdat form. Nowadays this hugely entertaining tale has become very popular in Russia, and has inspired many adaptations across the world.

Der russische Romancier Michail Bulgakow (1891-1940) sehnte sich nach Ruhe und führte ein atemloses Leben: Dreimal war er verheiratet; er studierte Medizin, schlug sich als Übersetzer und Theaterregisseur durch. Er war morphiumsüchtig; seine Werke wurden zensiert, er widersetzte sich Stalin, der ihm die Ausreise verwehrte. Als er mit 49 Jahren starb, hatte er die letzten zwölf Jahre an seinem Lebenswerk Meister und Margarita geschrieben.
