The tools to create the world we live in are changing substantially. The digital age is
about to penetrate into manufacturing practice. Machines and products become virtually connected and new manufacturing technologies, commonly subsumed under
the term 3D printing, hold out the prospect of great flexibility in regards to production
footprints and product customisation. These developments call today´s traditional
structures of product-making industries, which are primarily based on the concept
of centralised fabrication, into question. This volume collects contributions of multiple
disciplines such as economics, production management, logistics, mechanical
engineering, and information technology aiming to present a holistic view on a digital
