Was ist eine Stadt? Oder besser noch: Was kann eine Stadt sein? Diese Frage hat der neue Direktor des Kunstmuseums Wolfsburg Ralf Beil nicht nur sich, sondern auch einem Kreis ausgewählter Künstler vorgelegt, um potenzielle Entgrenzungen, Metamorphosen und Umdeutungen Wolfsburgs zu erkunden. Der Katalog versammelt die Ergebnisse dieses schöpferischen Experimentierens, das sich nicht auf den musealen Raum beschränkt, sondern die ganze Stadt als Inspirationsquelle für Interventionen nutzt. Eigens für die Ausstellung entstehen großangelegte Künstlerprojekte wie eine Totalinstallation von Julian Rosefeldt, Performances von John Bock, aber auch Fotoarbeiten von Eva Leitolf und Peter Bialobrzeski. Die weit ausgreifenden und vielgestaltigen Arbeiten spiegeln nicht nur Geschichte und Gegenwart, sondern auch die Zukunft einer Stadt zwischen Industrialisierung, Mobilisierung und Digitalisierung, zwischen Masse und Individuum, lokaler und globaler Aktion.

What is a city? Or even better: what can a city be? The new director of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Ralf Beil, not only asked himself this question but also presented it to a circle of selected artists for the purpose of exploring the potential dissolution of Wolfsburgs boundaries, its metamorphosis, and its reinterpretation. The catalogue assembles the results of this creative experiment, which is not only confined to museum space but uses the entire city as a source of inspiration for interventions. Major artists projects are being developed specifically for the exhibition, such as a total installation by Julian Rosefeldt, performances by John Bock, or photographs by Eva Leitolf and Peter Bialobrzeski. The expansive and multiform works reflect not only the history and the present but also the future of a city between industrialization, mobilization, and digitalization, between mass and individual, local and global action.
