Beeindruckend zeitlos: Ekrem Yalcindags monumentale Ornamentwelten in der Tradition geometrischer Abstraktion und Konzeptkunst

Der in Istanbul, Wien und Frankfurt am Main lebende Künstler (geb. 1964 in Gölbasi) zählt zu den wichtigsten zeitgenössischen Künstlern. Yalcindag, der in der Türkei aufwuchs, entwickelte seine Bildsprache vor fast 20 Jahren als Student von Hermann Nitsch und Thomas Bayrle in Frankfurt am Main. Sein feiner, pastoser Farbauftrag, der mit einem Pinsel der Stärke null ausgeführt wird, erfordert einen enormen Zeitaufwand und führt zu einer reliefartigen Malerei, die sich aus Hunderten kleiner Flächen aufbaut. Dass Yalcindags Farbauftrag an den der amerikanischen Farbfeldmaler erinnert, verwundert nicht, führt man sich seine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der Minimal Art vor Augen. Die Publikation bietet erstmals eine Analyse seiner originären Werkentwicklung und Bildsprache. Sie leistet aber auch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Erforschung der Rezeption außereuropäischer ornamentaler Traditionen innerhalb der zeitgenössischen Kunst.

Living in Istanbul, Vienna, and Frankfurt am Main, Yalcindag ( 1964 in Gölbasi) is one of the most important artists working today. Having spent his childhood in Turkey, he then developed his visual language as a student of Hermann Nitsch and Thomas Bayrle in Frankfurt am Main nearly twenty years ago. His meticulous, impasto technique executed with an extremely fine paint brush demands an enormous amount of time. It results in relief-like paintings constructed from hundreds of layers. That Yalcindags application of paint recalls the American Color Field painters should be of no surprise if one keeps in mind his intense engagement with Minimal Art. This publication offers the first analysis of the artists original practice and visual language, while also providing an important contribution to the study of the reception of non-European ornamental traditions within contemporary art.Exhibition: Art and Cultural Foundation Opelvillen Rüsselsheim 7.9.6.11.2016

His delicate, thick impasto, which is executed with light brushstrokes, demands an enormous amount of time. It results in relief-like paintings that are constructed from hundreds of small surfaces. That Yalcindag´s application of paint recalls the American Color Field painters should be no surprise if one keeps his intense engagement with Minimal Art in mind. Nevertheless, an analysis of his singular work and visual language has yet to be made, that is, until this publication. This revision is an important contribution to the reception of non-European ornamental traditions within contemporary art.
