Die Publikation zu Kounellis´ spektakulärer Inszenierung in den Hallen der Monnaie de Paris

Ein Ausnahmekünstler gibt sich die Ehre: Der großartige Jannis Kounellis stellt aus, und der Rahmen könnte angemessener nicht sein. In der Monnaie de Paris, der alten Börse von Paris, ist in einem furiosen Streich ein begehbares Gesamtkunstwerk ´in situ´ entstanden, das den Pionier der Arte povera angemessen würdigt. Das bei uns erschienene Buch ergänzt die Ausstellung, es bildet sie nicht ab. Aber und vor allem verschafft es dem Leser ein Wiedersehen mit den berühmten Installationen wie die zwölf Pferde ("12 live horses") aus dem Jahr 1969, Objekte wie "artist´s shoes with golden soles" aus dem Jahr 1975 und Installationen wie diejenige für das Museum Haus Esters (1984) oder das Museum Ludwig Köln (1997). Ein feiner, bildhafter Überblick für Fans, mit Aphorismen von Kounellis selbst und einer Einführung der Kuratoren. Das beste aber kommt zum Schluss: Jannis Kounellis hat für unsere Edition Gerd Hatje eine Lithografie geschaffen, die hoffentlich bald eintrifft und endlich in Augenschein genommen werden kann: Der Stiefelabdruck des Künstlers als Lithografie und in der kleinen Auflage auf Bütten für den kleinen Geldbeutel erschwinglich gemacht. Ersetzt zwar den Paris-Besuch nicht ganz, kommt aber schon ganz nah ran...

Those who entered the exhibition spaces of the Monnaie de Paris in this spring would have surely held their breath. Jannis Kounellis ( 1936 in Piraeus), cofounder and one of the most important representatives of Arte Povera, designed a completely new, open work of art for the venerable halls of the Monnaie de Paris, the French Mint. As is the case for all of his works, for Kounellis what comes into play first is space, followed by the idea for filling it. Thus the catalogue as well as the exhibition consummate the development of his oeuvre on the basis of each of the spaces in which this vibrant art takes shape.
