Spatestens seit sie 2015 den japanischen Pavillon auf der Venedig Biennale bespielte, ist Chiharu Shiota ( 1972, Osaka, Japan) eine der gefragtesten Künstlerinnen der Welt. Alltagliche Objekte, Erinnerungs- und Fundstücke pragen die Bildsprache der Künstlerin und stehen für die Themen ihres uvres - Erinnerung, Heimat, Migration, Tod und Leben. Als zentrale Figuren in raumgreifenden Installationen mit Wollfaden wählt sie alte Koffer und Schuhe, Schlüssel, Kleidungstücke, Mobel und Briefe, die sie spannungsvoll in ihre Werke und Performances integriert. In der vorliegenden Publikation dokumentieren Fotografien, Filmstills, Zeichnungen, Druckgrafiken und Objekte aus dem Archiv der Künstlerin umfassend die Stationen von Shiotas Werk und veranschaulichen ihre zumeist ortsspezifischen, temporaren Installationen. Die Publikation erscheint zur ersten Retrospektive der in Berlin lebenden Künstlerin und konzentriert sich auf ihr Schaffen der letzten 20 Jahre.

Chiharu Shiota ( 1972 in Osaka, Japan) is one of the most sought-after artists in the world, at the latest since the presentation of her installation in the Japan Pavilion at the Biennale in Venice in 2015. Everyday objects, mementos, and objets trouvés characterize the artists pictorial language and stand for the subject matter in her oeuvrerecollection, homeland, migration, death, and life. The key figures in her expansive installations with wool threads are old suitcases and shoes, keys, pieces of clothing, furniture, and letters, which she enthrallingly integrates into her works and performances. In the present publication, photographs, film stills, drawings, prints, and objects from the artists archive comprehensively document the stations in Shiotas oeuvre and illustrate her mostly site-specific, temporary installations. The book is published on the occasion of the first retrospective of the Berlin-based artist and concentrates on her creative work of the last twenty years.
