Karl Friedrich Schinkels (1781-1841) vielfältige Verbindungen mit Wissenschaft, Kunst und Architektur verliehen ihm eine eminent kulturelle Präsenz. Ein erfindungsreicher Szenograf und passionierter Leser, zudem musikalisch und zeichnerisch begabt, erdachte Schinkel eine Fülle von Projekten für Berlin, Preußen und Orte wie Athen und die Krim. Versiert und ästhetisch anspruchsvoll im Umgang mit allen Aspekten der Architektur, begann er seine Projekte und Bauten in Stichserien herauszugeben und erfand damit die erfolgreichste Form der Architekturpublikation überhaupt. Seine Architekturbilder bereicherte er mit Erfahrungen auf dem Theater; er verlieh seinen Bauten eine stark affektive Wirkung, die weit über funktionale und technische Belange hinausweist. Weitgereist zwischen Sizilien, Schottland, Polen und Frankreich erdachte Schinkel Bauten, die sich im internationalen Vergleich zu behaupten vermögen und als Bauideen bis heute eine nachhaltige Wirkung zeitigen.

The 19th-century German architect and artist, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was among the great personalities in the world of architecture. Classicism and Romanticism moved towards Modern Architecture in his buildings; his Collection of Architectural Designs led the way to our contemporary understanding of the work of the architect; and as a state master building he shaped the architectural culture of his time.

A universal scholar and versatile artist, Schinkel led an intensive, if not boundless exchange with the society and the developments of the 19th century.
