Ailianos (Claudius Aelianus, etwa 165-225 n. Chr.) schrieb neben einem Werk über "Vermischte Forschung" ein umfangreiches Buch zum Tierleben. Der Autor zeigt uns, was antike Menschen an Tieren bemerkenswert fanden. Uns begegnen Mücken und Elefanten ebenso wie liebestolle Fische und wundersame Einhörner.

Das Werk ist außerdem ein "Steinbruch" für Zitate aus der sonst verlorenen antiken Literatur. Vor allem aber ist es eine Fundgrube für Tiergeschichten, die nicht nur ein an der Antike interessiertes Lesepublikum ansprechen, sondern auch Tierfreunde weit darüber hinaus.
