Ed Ruschas ( 1937) ikonische Interpretationen der amerikanischen Gesellschaft machen ihn zu einem der wichtigsten Vertreter der amerikanischen Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Werke sind eng verknüpft mit kühl-eleganten Darstellungen von stilisierten Tankstellen, Leuchtreklame-Schildern und archetypischen Landschaften. Seit Beginn der 1960er-Jahre hat kaum jemand die Entwicklung der visuellen Kultur in und um L.A. so radikal wiedergegeben wie Ed Ruscha, der auch selbst dort lebt und arbeitet. Seine Motive sind inspiriert von dem Blick auf die Straße, von der Frontscheibe und der Kinoleinwand und geben so einen spürbaren Eindruck von dem großen, flachen Stadtraum mitten in der Wüste. Der bibliophile Ausstellungskatalog mit über 50 Werken aus der UBS Art Collection umfasst nicht nur die Zeit ab der 1960er-Jahre, sondern zeigt auch die technisch und grafisch neuen Ansätze in Ruschas Werk. Benannt nach einem von Ruschas "Wort-Bildern", enthält die Publikation zudem einen Essay von George Condo sowie ein Interview mit dem Künstler, geführt von dem Kurator des Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

With his iconic interpretations of American society, Ed Ruscha ( 1937) stands out as one of the most prominent figures of 20th century American art. His art is closely associated with cool and elegant representations of stylized gas stations, Hollywood logos and archetypal landscapes. Since the beginning of the 1960s no one else has so radically interpreted the development of modern visual culture in and around L.A. where the artist lives and works. Deriving his motifs from the perspective of the road, the windshield and the movie screen, his works give a distinctive sense of the huge, flat city space located in the desert.Featuring over 50 works from the UBS Art Collection, the exhibition catalogue covers not only the time from c. 1960 onward, but also the technically and graphically innovative approaches that Ruscha has made use of over the years, including studies for his most iconic paintings and artist books. Ed Ruschawurde 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska, geboren und wuchs seit 1941 in Oklahoma City auf. 1956 zog er nach Los Angeles und studierte am Chouinard Art Institute. Sein Werk wird weltweit ausgestellt und befindet sich in den Sammlungen namhafter Museen und in Privatsammlungen. 2001 wurde Ruscha in die American Academy of Arts and Letters gewählt und repräsentierte die USA bei der Biennale von Venedig im Jahre 2005.
