Der Atem ist seit jeher eng verbunden mit Seele und Geist: Tiefe, langsame Atmung hat einen beruhigenden Effekt auf die Psyche, Atemübungen sind wesentliche Bestandteile geistiger Schulungswege, sowohl in christlichen als auch fernöstlichen Meditationen. Auch für den dänischen Künstler Jeppe Hein (geb. 1974, Kopenhagen) spielt das Atmen eine besondere Rolle. Die Ausstellung Einatmen - Innehalten - Ausatmen sowie die begleitende Publikation rücken erstmals die Bedeutung des Atems als künstlerisches Thema und Material am Beispiel von Jeppe Hein in einen besonderen Fokus. Der Katalog schlägt dabei einen kulturhistorischen Bogen bis zu den ersten Hochkulturen, bei denen der Atem als Sitz der Lebenskraft bereits einen herausragenden Stellenwert hatte. Neben Ausstellungsansichten und Aufsätzen kommt auch Jeppe Hein im Gespräch mit Helen Hirsch selbst zu Wort.

From time immemorial breath has been closely tied to the soul and the spirit. Deep, slow breathing has a calming effect on the psyche, and breath exercises are essential components of spiritual education methods in both Christian and Eastern meditation. Breath also plays a special role for the Danish artist Jeppe Hein ( 1974, Copenhagen). The exhibition Inhale Hold Exhale and its companion publication are the first to shift the focus onto the significance of breath as both a theme and material for art, using Heins practice as the prime example. The catalog also draws an arc backward through the art history, all the way to the earliest high cultures, in which breath already had exceptional value as the seat of the life force.
