The present book delineates the route to freedom in two African American literary works one written and published in the nineteenth century namely Frederick Douglass´s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Written by Himself (1845) and the other written and published in the twentieth century namely Alex Haley´s Roots (1976). The thesis is the first to connect both works of art though they are recommended to those interested in American slavery and the cause of freedom and equality.
