The purpose of mine ventilation is to create the necessary working conditions by supplying enough quantity of fresh air to every person in the mine; diluting, rendering harmless and sweeping away dangerous gases; creating the necessary working conditions of humidity and air temperature; and, removing dusts and fumes from blasting. To accomplish these tasks requires thorough understanding of the ventilation techniques applicable in mining and other underground workings; the skills of ventilation schemes computation, based on the in-depth understanding of the properties of the gases encountered in mine workings, and the processes of their formation, generation and spread in the mine workings; and, the processes of heat exchange and dust formation. The manual content is therefore concentrated summary of all what would enable to consider the sources of harmful impurities in the air-streams of mine and other underground workings, the explosive properties of mine dust, the laws of airflow and distribution in the mines and the problems of gas and dust dynamics in the mines, in the designing and management of the ventilation systems of underground and surface mines.
Antipas Massawe has PhD in Mining Engineering from Moscow State Mining Institute in 1989. He has wide working experience in coal, gold and gemstones exploration and mining in the former USSR and T nz ni . The author is retired senior lecturer of the Univ. of Dar es Salaam. Now is researching and consulting in mining and environmental issues.
