In 1931 Germany, Max Beissinger, the owner of a bookshop, and Hanna Ginsberg, a budding concert violinist, meet and fall in love. Their story unfolds over the next five years, as everything in Germany changes with Hitler´s rise to power, and their love is tested, faced with a changing landscape and the realities of war, not the least of which is that Hanna is Jewish and Max is not. Max has a secret, too, causing him to leave Hanna for months at a time, and helping Max believe he will be able to save Hanna if things in Germany become too dangerous. In 1946, Hanna Ginsberg awakens in a field outside of Berlin, with no memory of the past ten years and no idea what has happened to Max, not knowing his whereabouts or even if he´s alive. After moving to London to live with her sister, she slowly rebuilds her life and works to become the concert violinist she always dreamed she would be.
