Diese Schrift stellt das umfangreichste erhaltene Lehrbuch über die Kunst des Genrealbaßspiels dar. Es ist ein durch und durch praktisches Werk: wer es durchgerabeitet hatte, konnte sich gewiß als einen perfekten Generalbaßspieler ansehen.
Das Buch sollte vorwiegend zum Selbstunterricht dienen und fand zu seiner Zeit reichlichen Beifall und weite Verbreitung. Man kann es als eine der bedeutendsten Erscheinungen in der musikalischen Literatur ansehen, die auch heute noch als Quelle für den musikalischen Charakter der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts wichtig ist.

This work represents the most extensive textbook still extant on the art of playing thorough bass. The work is thoroughly practical, whoever has worked through it may certainly regard himself as an all-round thorough bass performer.
The book was intended primarily for self-teaching and met with great approval and a broad contemporary audience. As a result it may be regarded as one of the most important musical publications of the time. Now, as then, it is an important source documenting the musical character of the first half of the 18th century.
