Eine wirklich neue Fotografie

Die "Fotografieschulen" des Rheinlands haben internationales Format. Mit der Fotografie als konzeptuellem Medium sind die Namen Bernd und Hilla Becher verbunden, aus deren Klasse an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf die berühmte "Becher-Schule" hervorgegangen ist. Seit 1990 ist an der Kunsthochschule für Medien in Köln der Diplomstudiengang "Audiovisuelle Medien" eingerichtet, ein völlig neuer Ort zukunftsweisender Lehre und Praxis der künstlerischen Fotografie. Die Künstler innen von "Next Generations. Aktuelle Fotografie made im Rheinland" folgen im Kern den konzeptuellen Ansätzen, erweitern die Fotografie jedoch in den Raum, das Bewegtbild, die Malerei, die Poesie, die Grafik und Fotografik. Die in den 1970er und 1980er Jahre Geborenen wissen um die Flüchtigkeit von Bildern im Netz. Sie reflektieren deren Präsenz in der alltäglichen Wahrnehmung ebenso wie die Bedingungen ihrer Konstruktion und Reproduktion, oftmals als Hybride analoger und digitaler Herstellungstechniken. Vor dem fotohistorischen Hintergrund verabschieden sie alte Vorstellungen von Fotografie als Abbild der Realität und binden das einst verlockende Wirklichkeitsversprechen in die Echokammern ihres neuen künstlerischen Arbeitens.

The Real New Photographic Works

The "schools of photography" of the Rhineland are internationally renowned. Closely connected to photography as a conceptual medium are the names of Bernd and Hilla Becher. The famous "Becher School" emerged from their class at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Since 1990, the diploma program "Audiovisual Media" has been available at the Academy of Media Arts (KHM) in Cologne, an entirely new place for future-oriented teaching and practice of art photography. The artists of "Next Generations. Contemporary Photography made in the Rhineland" basically follow conceptual approaches, yet extend photography to space, the moving image, painting, poetry, graphics and to photo-graphics. Those born in the 1970s and 1980s are aware of the fleeting nature of images on the Internet. They reflect their presence in our everyday perception as well as the conditions of their construction and reproduction, frequently as hybrids of analogue and digital processing techniques. Against the background of the history of photography, they move on from old notions of photography as an image of reality, and embed the once tantalizing promise of reality into the echo chambers of their new artistic work.
