Sound, vision, film, and a destroyed piano!

What happens when musicians make use of ideas and strategies from the art world? And what kind of pictures result when painters are influenced by music? To be interested in other people´s lives, to follow the unknown, to copy it, to use it in one´s own work – in short, to cross-map between the worlds of music and the visual arts: this is the subject of the exhibition and the catalogue HYPER! A JOURNEY INTO ART AND MUSIC curated by Max Dax, the former editor-in-chief of Spex and Electronic Beats. The book will include classic works such as Peter Saville´s ground--break-ing album cover for New Order´s 1983 -masterpiece "Power, Corruption and Lies" and the narrative, -minimalist imagery of Emil Schult on which the cover of Kraftwerk´s 1974 album "Autobahn" was based, and Cyprien Gaillard´s acclaimed 3D in-stallation "Night Life" from 2015. The -influence of Richard Wagner on the work of the performance artist Christoph Schlingensief, who died in 2010, will be shown, as well as a -related video installation with a minute-opera by Alexander Kluge. The mutual influences between music and art will be illustrated with examples by Albert -Oehlen and Scooter, -Thomas Scheibitz and the Melvins, as well as Daniel Blumberg. Photographs and video works by Andrea Stappert, Sven Marquardt, Andreas Gursky, The KLF, Mark Leckey, and Bettina Pousttchi will lend the book a -documentary dimension. The book is -narratively underpinned by numerous background interviews that Max Dax conducted with the participants in HYPER! over the past 30 years.

Qu´arrive-t-il lorsque des musiciens s´orientent selon des idées et stratégies venues du monde de l´art ? Et quels tableaux voit-on apparaître lorsque des peintres sont influencés par la musique ? S´intéresser à la vie des autres, suivre l´inconnu, le copier, l´introduire dans son propre travail et l´utiliser - en bref, croiser les correspondances entre les univers de la musique et des arts plastiques, c´est ce que font l´exposition organisée par le rédacteur en chef d´Ex-Spex- et d´Electronic-Beats Max Dax et le catalogue HYPER! A JOURNEY INTO ART AND MUSIC. Ce dernier réunit des classiques comme la pochette du chef d´oeuvre du nouvel ordre " Power, Corruption and Lies " de Peter Saville qui a ouvert la voie en 1983 ou les images narratives-minimalistes d´Emil Schult qui ont servi de modèle à la célèbre pochette " Autobahn " de Kraftwerk en 1974, ou encore la fameuse installation 3D " Night Life " de Cyprien Gaillard en 2015. L´influence de Richard Wagner sur l´oeuvre de l´artiste actionniste décédé en 2010 Christoph Schlingensief y est abordée, de même que sur le " Minutenoper " d´Alexander Kluge spécialement composé. Les influences réciproques entre musique et art sont mises en lumière avec l´exemple d´Albert Oehlen et Scooter, de Thomas Scheibitz et les Melvin ou de Daniel Blumberg, ou encore des travaux photo et vidéo de Sven Marquardt et Andreas Gursky ; des travaux de The KLF, Mark Leckey, Bettina Pousttchi et Wolfgang Tillmans élargissent la perspective au documentaire avec une longue série de photos. Le livre doit sa cohésion narrative à un grand nombre d´interviews à l´arrière-plan, réalisées par Max Dax avec les protagonistes d´HYPER! depuis 30 ans.
