In Ghana, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is one of the social protection measures undertaken by the government to provide healthcare for its citizens. Persons with Disabilities and their families may be considered to be among the worthiest recipients of such social protection measures. A purposive sampling was used to select the respondents for the study (persons with disabilities and NHIA staff). The study found that challenges faced by PWDs in accessing the NHIS included inability to raise money to register for the service, geographic and transportation barriers in accessing the NHIS registration sites and inability to access the facilities due to buildings not being designed to cater for PWDs. The study concluded that government should resource NHIA with sign language interpreters, adequate public education of NHIS should be done to enrol more PWDs onto the program.
