Sense of coherence can be defined as a way of seeing life and the ability to successfully manage the many stressors that are encountered in the course of life itself. Several studies have proposed the relationship between an individuals sense of coherence and health. It has become an accepted notion that a high sense of coherence can lead to better health and quality of life. Although there are a couple of studies stating this, there are fewer studies stating the relationship between a mothers sense of coherence and the health (oral health) of her children. There are even far less studies explaining this relationship among the African population. The aim of this study was to describe socio-demographic factors that can affect a Nigerian mothers´ sense of coherence (SOC) and the effect of their SOC levels on the oral health related quality of life (OHRQOL) of their preschool children.
