This book draws on theory, research, and practice-oriented literature to offer an introduction to flipped learning and offer busy instructors advice on how to flip their academic English language courses. The chapters balance theoretical foundations, practical applications, and useful resources for developing materials. The first half of this book defines flipped learning and academic English, describes how it supports English language learning, and explains the role of technology, as well as issues with accountability and feedback. The second half of the book then makes connections between the theoretical issues presented in the first three chapters and the practical applications in the following chapters, which provide lesson descriptions and assessment ideas for language learning contexts with or without access to technology. The book concludes with a list of tools and technologies for developing materials and activities, as well as additional resources for professional development and further exploration of flipped English language learning.

Dr. Erik Voss is an associate teaching professor at NU Global at Northeastern University, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in public speaking and advanced academic listening and speaking. He has taught ESL/EFL in Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, and China beginning in the early 2000´s, and TESOL courses in sociolinguistics, computer-assisted language learning, and second language assessment. Dr. Voss presents and publishes on technology for language learning and assessment. He is an active member of the International Language Testing Association (ILTA) and reviews manuscripts for Language Testing, Language Assessment Quarterly, the Journal of English for Academic Purposes, and Language Learning & Technology. Dr. Ilka Kostka is an associate teaching professor at the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University, where she teaches and develops academic reading and writing courses to undergraduate and graduate international students. She has twelve years´ experience teaching ESL/EFL and TESOL courses for pre-service teachers. Since she began flipping her ESL courses several years ago, she has published and presented on flipped learning at regional and international conferences and provided professional development workshops for instructors. In 2018, she completed the Flipped Learning 3.0 Level-I and Level-II certification courses offered by the Flipped Learning Global Initiative.
