Specimens of each species of economic importance to local people were collected and recorded. Details that could not be preserved on the specimens i.e. smell, colours, information on the locality such as the name of the place, altitude, was recorded (Bridson & Forman, 1992). The collected material was identified with available taxonomic literature (Dale & Greenway, 1961; Gachathi, 1989; Agnew, 1994; Beentje, 1994; Kokwaro, 1994). The identified specimens were compared with plant specimens in the Nairobi University herbarium. All voucher specimens were deposited in the Kenyatta University herbarium. From the identified specimens a checklist was compiled.
Florence Ngari is a lecturer at the Kenya Polytechnic Universty college in the department of botany. She lives with her family in Kenya.
