Urbanization is one of the most evident examples of human modification of the earth. As the proportion of urban land continues to grow driven by cities expansion into natural ecosystems and agricultural areas, there is still little knowledge about impacts of urbanization on a regional scale on which policymakers traditionally operate. This work examines impacts of urbanization on the climate in Europe on the regional scale addressing following questions: how does urban land cover contribute to the near surface temperatures and precipitation? would this contribution change if cities grow? how do urban climate and pollution contribute to the terrestrial carbon balance? The book presents quantitative estimates of these impacts for 2000-2005
