The discovery of different fibre types in skeletal muscle has led to the ambitious goal of both coaches and sportsmen to gain insight into the muscle fibre type distribution of individual athletes. For this purpose, normally a muscle biopsy sample is needed. Investigation of muscle metabolism and fibre types, however, is also possible by non-invasive methods. The potential methods for investigation of muscle metabolism and muscle fibre types will be discussed in detail in this work.
Dominik Pesta, born in 1981, is molecular biologist and sports scientist. After research visits in Cologne and Manchester he is currently a research fellow at the Medical University of Innsbruck in the field of altitude and muscle physiology and mitochondrial bioenergetics. Additionally, he is involved in doping prevention.
