Lucrecia King Roces Kasilag, First Lady of Philippine Music, is a nationally acclaimed composer and artist in the Philippines. This book intends to provide a brief historical background of Philippine music, a biography of Kasilag describing her work and accomplishments, a list of her compositions and her contributions as a composer in today s musical world, along with detailed analyses of selected piano works for its sound, texture, harmony, melody, rhythm and form, and Western and Eastern influences reflecting classic and romantic orientation with some use of twentieth-century techniques. The selected piano works include April Morning (Fantasie Tone-Poem) (1941), Theme and Variations (based on a Filipino folk tune Walay Angay ) (1950) and Elegy on Mt. Pinatubo (1991), which were chosen to extend knowledge of Kasilag s piano works and its compositional style, and to promote interest in their performance to the academic and performance community.
