How are female roles constructed and presented in literature? How does feminist literature rework standardised images of women and what types of literature are actually feminist? How does the literary concept of the body fit western society´s traditional perception of female norms? In this comparative analysis of "Sexing the Cherry" and "Written on the Body" by Jeanette Winterson and "The Life and Loves of a She Devil" by Fay Weldon the questions above as well as the realist and postmodern themes and techniques of the literary texts are discussed. The analysis shows how gender, its stereotypes and deviations are incorpoated in literature. Between uncanny bodies and incarcerated flesh, identities emerge that do not necessarily match normative ideals.
Born in Linz, Austria, Victoria Reinberg studied English, Scandinavian Studies and Public Communication at the Universities of Vienna and Oslo, where she also produced radio features on society, art and literature. She worked in the field of corporate communications in international companies and is now teacher in adult education.
