The study looks into challenges before the pension system in India with a special mention of Kerala which in an explicit sense a front runner in demographic achievement and is standing with a notion of welfare state. The study mainly looks at the fiscal stress which of the pension system where available pension system to the minority drags very large resources of the state and looks for how this non developmental component of the public expenditure goes up in a fast aging society as in Kerala and in turn result in the pension crisis that having effect on intergenerational distribution. The study in general finds that condition of elderly in a fast ageing society like India is detioriating with poverty and deprivation. The study looks into social security scene for the aged with a structural crisis in terms of coverage among the aged. it emphasis need for a structural reform of the system.
Dr. Syam Prasad currently working as Research Officer in IRMA, Anand, Gujara got his PhD from JNU in March 2010. His doctoral thesis titled as Poverty and Deprivation among Elderly in India. He also completed his Mphil from CDS.His main areas of research are pensions, old age security, poverty, inequality, etc.
