The institution of marriage is an important institution in a society where the practice of equality in gender relations evolves. Although the institution of marriage has undergone changes over the decades, nevertheless the complexity of this institution is deeper as it portrays the gender stratification of husband and wife in their own homes. This hierarchical status is a reflection of the marital power that exists in a household. Understanding marital power is essentially understanding the practice of gender equality between spouses. Often, the position of a wife in the house is governed by the lack of independence and ideologies stemming from cultural and religious influences. This study examines the marital power in Sikh households by understanding the complex interplay between religion, culture and resources. The Sikh situation portrays a unique case for study as Sikhism is an extraordinary religion which emphasizes on egalitarianism and equality of men and women in this society. The adoption of cultural values from this religion and other sources is an important process which contributes to the values, norms and practices of this community.
