Although research on falls in older adults increased considerably, the question: What causes seniors to fall?´ cannot be answered with certainty. Study 1 of this book explored difference in fall definitions and reasons for falling between seniors, health care providers and the research literature. While researchers described the event, the seniors and HCP associated falls with antecedents and consequences of falling. Study 2 described the adaptation of an investigation method used in the industry to create the Seniors Falls Investigation Methodology (SFIM). SFIM shifted focus from a person-centred to a systems approach and from immediate causes to latent antecedents of accidents. In study 3, SFIM was used to investigate falls in community dwelling seniors. The results confirmed that the causes of falls originated on all four levels of the Swiss Cheese Model of Accident Causation. This book is especially useful to healthcare professionals, risk assessment, patient safety and public health experts, hospital and nursing home administrators, seniors and their families.
