Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with high morbidity and mortality. The book gives a comprehensive review into the history, clinical and immunological aspects including diagnostic and prognostic markers of SLE. The report also describes SLE within a multi-ethnic Caribbean population and compares findings within the three major races. The patient population is drawn from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, one of the few Caribbean countries with significant concentrations of people of African, East-Indian and mixed descent. The peoples of the Caribbean are descended primarily from inhabitants of West Africa and India and has provided an interesting opportunity to compare the major characteristics to those occurring in their ancestral homeland. While a number of studies have been conducted within developed countries, no comprehensive work has been undertaken within the Caribbean area. The only study of its kind from this region, it is a book for graduate students, medical students and researchers.
