The growing popularity of IEEE 802.11 standards for building local wireless networks has generated extensive literature on its performance in a variety of different environments using different types of traffic. WLANs support numerous applications ranging from simplistic web browsing, email and file transfer to delay-sensitive applications such as voice over IP, video streaming and video conferencing. However, most of the studies have been performed to analyze the performance of wireless network when subject to increasing data or voice traffic. This book explores the possible effects on the performance of the network when real-time applications such as video streaming are transmitted simultaneously with data. While most of the studies conducted have been limited to 802.11b and 802.11g; this study focuses on the newer 802.11n. It considers the effect on the throughput and other performance parameters when HD video transmission is introduced in a network carrying purely data traffic. It also gives insight on the approximate number of users carrying CBR traffic at different data rates that can be supported over different environments (commercial, residential, and isolated) on 802.11n.
Varun Vora is a Test Engineer with Brocade, where he works on FCP, FCIP and FCOE protocols. He graduated from University of Colorado at Boulder in 2009 with a Master´s degree in Electrical Engineering. He is the author of "High Rate Video Streaming over 802.11n in Dense Wi-Fi Environments" published in the 5th IEEE Workshop on Network Measurements.
