The term ´´body integrity identity disorder´´ has been used for some ten years only, making this condition one of the most unknown and misunderstood among other mental disorders. Yet, it cannot be overlooked as individuals all around the world feel an obsessive desire to impair their bodies, mostly by amputation. An issue like this is a highly sensitive one, since commonly used methods for treating mental disorders do not seem to be working, so medical experts and ethicists are engaged in a (often regarded as controversial) debate of whether amputation could serve as an acceptable form of therapy in these cases.
