Eine Ethik des Glücks Um ein glückliches Leben führen zu können, sollte der Mensch gemäß Epiktet (1./2. Jh. n. Chr.) frei von Affekten und unabhängig gegenüber allen Dingen der Außenwelt sein. Er sollte Haltung bewahren und nicht zu viel erwarten. "Die Meinung der anderen muss dir gleichgültig sein! Lass dich nicht aus der Fassung bringen! Wahre das rechte Maß!" Das kleine "Handbuch der Moral" hatte große Wirkung auf das frühe Christentum und das Denken der Menschen in byzantinischer Zeit. Goethe schätzte den Autor mehr als die so genannten großen Philosophen.

Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. The original texts are comprehensively annotated, and feature an introductory chapter. Epiktet gründete zunächst in Rom eine Schule, wurde im Jahr 94 vertrieben und ließ sich im westgriechischen Nikopolis nieder, wo er etwa 135 n. Chr. starb, verehrt und bewundert von seinen Schülern.

Dr. Rainer Nickel studierte Klassische Philologie in Marburg und Berlin und wurde 1970 in Berlin über ein philosophiegeschichtliches Thema promoviert. Der Altphilologe arbeitete zunächst als Lehrer für Latein und Griechisch, bevor er Leiter des Max-Planck-Gymnasiums in Göttingen wurde. Er ist Mitarbeiter der Reihe "Tusculum" und an der Herausgabe der Zeitschrift "Der altsprachliche Unterricht" beteiligt. Er zählt zu den führenden Didaktikern des altsprachlichen Unterrichts.
