Epikur, 341-270 v. Chr., ist einer der am häufigsten - oft auch absichtlich - missverstandenen Autoren der Antike. Im Zentrum seines Denkens steht die Frage: Worauf beruht die Glückseligkeit des Weisen? Epikur antwortet: Der Weise ordnet sein Leben nach Regeln, die ihn von Furcht - vor den Göttern ebenso wie vor dem Tod -, von Begierde und Schmerz befreien. Epikurs Lustbegriff führt also nicht, wie häufig behauptet wurde, zu Völlerei, Egoismus und Ausschweifung, sondern zu einem Zustand der Ruhe, die aus einer zurückgezogenen, naturgemäßen Lebensweise resultiert. Der Mensch soll sich an den Dingen erfreuen, die die Natur ihm schenkt, sich damit aber auch bescheiden: mit dem Freundeskreis, dem Becher Wein und einem Stück Brot. Epikurs Wirkung reicht über Cicero, Seneca, die späten Neuplatoniker bis zu den französischen Moralisten des 17. Jahrhunderts, ja bis zu Nietzsche und in die Gegenwart.
