Zum christlichen Grundwissen gehört auch die Bergpredigt Jesu als seine bedeutendste programmatische Rede, unbeschadet der Forschungsfrage, welche Stücke darin von Jesus selbst stammen oder vom Evangelisten Matthäus hinzugefügt worden sind. Franziskus von Assisi hat die Bergpredigt gelebt, Luther hat sie geliebt, Leo Tolstoi, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King haben ihre Friedensprogramme aus ihr gewonnen. Im Vordergrund der Textauslegung steht die prinzipielle Frage nach der Erfüllbarkeit der Vorschläge Jesu. Die wichtigsten Stücke der Bergpredigt werden Spruch für Spruch und Bild für Bild im Blick auf damals und heute interpretiert, wobei vor allem auf die Gerechtigkeitsfrage geachtet wird. Die Bergpredigt ist mehr als eine kühle, sachliche Belehrung. Sie ist eine persönliche und gesellschaftliche Provokation.
