The book deals with four major Muslim revivalist movements which emerged during the Mughal period in India. These movements included Naqshbandi Movement, Wali Allahi Movement, Faraidi Movement and Mujahideen Movememnt. Having examined the brief history, structure and biographical sketches of the leaders of these movements the book looks into the views of these movements and closely reviews their concept about Muslim decline during Mughal period, which is regarded as the era of decline by these contemporary revivalist movements. The book also studies the movements´ proposed and practiced measures to check this decline. It argues that these movements regarded the remoteness from Islam as the basic cause of Muslim decline and they stressed on return to true Islam as the real remedy. It further contends that though these movements played positive and constructive roles in preserving separate identity of the Indian Muslims, this whole notion of the Muslim decline, with its causes and remedies, was based on idealistic and narrow perspectives.
