The roles of El Ni¤o and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Asian summer monsoon (ASM) upon the interannual variability of tropical cyclone activity over the Western North Pacific and North Indian Ocean Basins have been separately studied for years. However, an integrated approach on analyzing the relationships between cyclone genesis and movement and the variability of these atmospheric and oceanic phenomena does not exist. Besides, no attempt was ever made in linking the interannual variability of anomalous cyclone tracks with ENSO and ASM. This book tries to explore all these relationships. A new classification of anomalous tropical cyclone tracks over the Western North Pacific and North Indian Ocean Basins was also developed. This book is useful for undergraduate and graduate students in climatology, meteorology and atmospheric sciences, as well as a valuable text for researchers and tropical cyclone hazard managers.
Norman Kin Wai Cheung obtained his DPhil from Oxford University in 2004. He is now Senior Lecturer in Climatology and Hazards and Disaster Management at Kingston University London. His research ranges from tropical storms to hazard management. He is also a regular commentator on hurricane hazards for SKY NEWS.
